Egon Schultz is buried at the Neuer Friedhof der Hansestadt Rostock, which is about two kilometers west southwest of Rostock Stadtmitte. Coming from south of Rostock, get off of the A20 at Bundesstraße 103, and head north to Satower Straße, then head northeast. The cemetery will be on the right side of the road, at Satower Straße 16, 18050 Rostock.

Neuer Friedhof
Once you’ve entered the cemetery through the main gate, take the first right past the Friedhofsverwaltung. At the end of this path, past the parking lot on the right, take a left, then an immediate right. Pass the Kriegsgräber on the right, and the Schultz family grave will be at the end of this path. This is where a left turn will take you to section Pg, and a right turn will take you to section Rc. The family grave is in an unmarked section between Pg and Rc. Egon’s parents, Alfred (June 28, 1914 - April 10, 1992) and Frieda (March 3, 1921 - September 28, 1995), are also buried here. Also buried here are Paul Griesbach (June 30, 1897 - May 7, 1969), Helene Griesbach (September 2, 1896 - October 8, 1982), and Albert Schröder (April 16, 1886 - Octyober 30, 1972); it is not known exactly who these people are; I did not think to inquire with the Friedhofsverwaltung until later. As of 2011, Egon’s older brother, Armin, was still alive and living in Rostock.

Egon Schultz
Of the at least 140 Berlin Wall victims, Egon’s grave is one of the more remote graves, being it’s not in Berlin. But being historic, this grave is anything but obscure. This is because during the GDR era, Egon was a martyr. He was actually killed by friendly fire, but this fact wasn’t known until after the reunification of Germany. The East German party line was that Egon was murdered by “western agents”.

Once you have visited Egon’s grave, you might be interested in setting your Garmin to Dethardingstraße 16, 18057 Rostock.  This was known as Karl-Marx-Straße 16 during the GDR era. This was the Schultz family residence during the time Egon was killed. Egon was here for the last time just a few days before his death, as his parents were celebrating their 25th anniversary.
